The Casting Methods of Brake Drums
As an essential friction component of drum brake systems, brake drums should possess not only the required strength and rigidity as components but also as high and stable friction coefficients as possible, along with appropriate wear resistance, heat resistance, heat dissipation, and heat capacity.
According to different casting methods, brake drums are generally divided into three structures:
1. Integral Casting Type
It is generally made of high-strength gray cast iron or alloy cast iron containing Cr. This type of brake drum has a simple structure, convenient processing, and large heat capacity. For example, our brake drum is made of brake-drum-specific gray iron 250 material, cast as a whole with added weight and thickness for durability.
2. Steel Plate and Cast Iron Combination Type
The brake drum consists of a drum plate stamped from steel and a cast iron drum ring, forming an integral unit with a relatively small mass.
3. Light Alloy and Cast Iron Combination Type
The brake drum is cast from light alloy materials, such as aluminum alloy, with a cast iron lining. This type of brake drum is not only lightweight but also has excellent heat dissipation properties.
